Easy & Affordable LEGO Storage Solutions

Lego Playroom Storage, Kids LEGO playroom

Everyone's favorite toy brick is also every parent's pain in the foot. My oldest son's favorite toy has been LEGO for a few years. On holidays, birthdays, and any other occasion, he has a wishlist of sets for our family to choose from. He's been building an extensive collection fast.

But, the multiple little pieces can quickly become disorganized and take over your house, leaving you overwhelmed and frustrated with a toy you can genuinely feel good about your child playing with.

Everyone’s favorite toy brick is also every parent’s pain in the foot.

I quickly realized we would need effective storage options to prevent us from stepping on bricks and vacuuming up pieces. I've found some great, affordable options for showing off master builds and keeping LEGO sets manageable.

Here's how I've transformed my son's playroom into the ultimate LEGO creative space.

Displaying Finished LEGO Sets

For parents who want to display their child's finished sets (because who wants to rebuild a 300+ piece set), the LACK wall shelves from IKEA are a great solution.

The shelves are easy to install, but there is a weight limit to consider for larger LEGO sets.

These shelves come in three different lengths and colors. They are inexpensive, keep the finished sets out of reach from younger siblings, and your mini Master Builders' masterpieces look great on display. I opted for the longest size (73" x 10") because I had room for it and knew the collection would continue to grow.

Containing Loose Bricks

I used the IKEA ALEX drawer unit and STÖDJA flatware trays to avoid the awful pain that stepping on a LEGO brick triggers. The ALEX drawer unit comes in three different colors and a few different configurations (9-drawer, desk version, with wheels, etc.). STÖDJA trays in the 11" x 20" size and the 6" utensil tray work well in the drawers to separate and contain the different pieces.

Pro Tip:

Doing this together with my son allowed him to decide where the bricks went, making it more likely that he would return them to their designated home when finished.

I opted for the smaller 5-drawer unit because my son mainly builds sets and keeps the pieces together, so we have fewer loose bricks. Together, we sorted out pieces by color and type for his loose bricks, allowing for easy, organized access when building.

LEGO Build Space

Every mini Master Builder in training needs a creative space to continue working on their next build. For the space, I used two PÅHL desks (the top and underframe are sold separately) to create a workspace for building. With the adjustable legs, the desk grows with your child to stand or sit at. I added LEGO Baseplates to the top of one desk for easy building out of cities, sets, or, in my son's case, LEGO Super Mario worlds (If you have a LEGO and Super Mario fan, these are the best sets).

I have both a PÅHL desk in a longer and shorter length, but IKEA currently only offers the shorter length.

LEGO Set Storage

For the smaller sets that my son wanted to be able to play with and rebuild frequently, I found inexpensive storage totes at Target and these zippered pouches with a front pocket (to store LEGO instructions) on Amazon. The pouches fit nicely into the bins, and keeping all the pieces and instructions in a set together is easy. He can grab a set rebuild and take it back apart as he likes.

While the zippered pouches are more expensive, they are very high quality (worth the splurge). As my son grows out of sets (but wants to keep them), I plan to store them in a larger bin. These pouches will help keep them separate and fit nicely into a storage bin. #futureproofed

I’ve used two IKEA KALLAX units as versatile playroom toy storage. They can be placed vertically or horizontally as your space allows.

Extra Fun Details

LEGO has a knack for hitting all the details perfectly. I've added a few finishing touches to the LEGO space to make it extra fun for my son to get creative with his builds.
