Nursery Closet Goals: How I Maximized Space and Function

Baby boy nursery

We welcomed our second baby boy this fall. As we prepared to become a family of four, I struggled to find design inspiration for his nursery, so I started with what I knew best: the walk-in closet.

My closet requirements included:

  • Adjustable Hanging Space: I didn't want to waste space when the outfits were tiny, but I knew they would grow.

  • Drawers + Shelves: Plenty of storage space with drawers and shelves to hold an infant's clothing, blankets, diapers, and other essentials. As he gets bigger, the storage space can also contain sports gear, sweatshirts, etc.

  • Maximize Space + Flexibility: With a large closet, I want to adapt quickly as he moves through different life stages. I could add more shelving, remove drawers, have long-hanging items, etc.

  • Changing Station: I wanted to keep the changing table within the walk-in closet, which allows easy access to diapers and clothing and saves space in the bedroom.

The nursery room was originally our older son's playroom, and the closet was used as an art space. The large walk-in closet only had one builder-grade wire hanging shelf, which wouldn't work and underutilized the large space.

I turned to The Container Store's Elfa products to transform the walk-in closet with a system that can grow with our baby boy.

I worked with The Container Store to create a custom-designed closet using the Elfa Classic product, which fit my budget and requirements. It was easy to install, and I love how it turned out. It maximizes the space and fits all my requirements for now and as my son grows up.

If you are planning a custom closet space, I highly recommend working with a professional like myself or directly with The Container Store design specialists. I've found the DIY tools you can find online to design closets to be clunky, limited in customization, take time, and may even cost you more money.

Working with a professional will ensure you maximize the space to its full potential, save you time trying to figure it all out, and allow you to get custom layouts that work for your needs.

Here are some of the other great products used in the nursery.
