How I Organize LEGO Sets Without Taking Over the House
Everyone's favorite toy brick is also every parent's pain in the foot.
As my older child has grown, so has his LEGO collection. Birthdays, holidays, and special occasions have quickly turned into shelves full of completed sets, bins of loose bricks, and instruction books that all needed a home.
I knew we needed an organizing system that made it easy to build, play, display, and clean up—without LEGO taking over the entire house.
Here's how I organized our LEGO space using affordable products that can grow right alongside his collection.

Displaying Finished LEGO Sets
One thing I learned quickly is that kids want to keep their finished creations.
After spending hours building a set, taking it apart to fit in a storage bin usually isn't the answer.
That's why I love IKEA LACK wall shelves. They turn finished builds into room décor while keeping them safely displayed and off the floor.
I chose the longest shelf because I knew the collection would continue to grow, and the shelves come in multiple lengths and colors to fit different spaces.
The shelves are easy to install, but there is a weight limit to consider for larger LEGO sets.
Tip: Before installing shelves, think about how your LEGO collection will grow. Leaving space to add another shelf later is much easier than rearranging everything once the collection expands.
Organizing Loose Bricks
Loose LEGO bricks are inevitable, but they don't have to become one giant mixed bin.
I use an IKEA ALEX drawer unit with STÖDJA drawer organizers to sort loose pieces into simple categories. Since my older child mostly builds and keeps sets together, we didn't need dozens of tiny compartments. Sorting by color and a few common piece types has worked well for us.
Tip: Involve your child in deciding how to sort pieces. When they help create the organizing system, they're much more likely to maintain it.
Create a Dedicated Building Space
One of the best decisions we made was giving LEGO a permanent place to live.
Using IKEA PÅHL desks, we created a dedicated building space that grows alongside my older child thanks to the adjustable legs. I also added LEGO baseplates to one desktop, giving him a place to build cities, Super Mario worlds, and new creations without having to clear everything away each day.
Having a designated build zone has made cleanup easier and encourages more creative play.
Store Sets That Get Rebuilt
Not every LEGO set needs to stay assembled forever.
For smaller sets that my older child enjoys rebuilding, I use zippered storage pouches with the instruction books stored right inside the front pocket. The pouches fit neatly into storage bins, making it easy to grab a favorite set, rebuild it, and put everything back together afterward.
The pouches are a little more expensive than plastic bags, but the quality has been well worth the investment. As he outgrows certain sets, they'll also make long-term storage much easier by keeping every set together with its instructions.

IKEA KALLAX shelves continue to be one of my favorite storage solutions for kids' spaces.
They're versatile, grow with your child, and work well for everything from LEGO to books, games, and toys. As interests change, the storage can easily change too.
